Your loved ones love you no matter what, but do they really deserve to see you at your frumpiest? I’m referring to ‘private’ clothes that no one usually sees you in except for your family – or in this case for Jodie Foster a hidden photographer! You know the look: an oversized old sweatshirt, your stretched out jogging bottoms, and Uggs. It’s not uncommon to save the worst for those that love us the most! But there is a middle ground between slob and scrubbed up well for a night out! You can have comfortable ‘at home/doing errand’ clothes that feel great, and look good too.

What do we want most?

What do we really want to wear when we get home and want to relax? Most likely it’s comfort and familiarity; clothes that don’t grab our attention, clothes we don’t have to give much thought to. Here’s the good news. We can get that feeling from clothes that are either so worn they are comfy or we can buy new comfy clothes that look good being worn.

Lounging treasures in your wardrobe

A search through your wardrobe may result in discovering some key pieces that could replace the grungy outfits you’re wearing now. Consider recycling clothes you’ve worn in other situations into outfits you’ll wear at home. For example, some of your older cashmere jumpers may be looking a little short compared to current styles, but get layering with a long t-shirt underneath them that sticks out at the bottom.

Maybe your favourite jeans from last year aren’t going to be your going out jeans this spring. Think about recycling them into at-home jeans especially if they have that comfy stretch in them.

Shopping for new stuff

If you feel like you have nothing worth salvaging, the great news is that lounge-around-the-house clothing doesn’t have to be expensive. We tend to spend money on our work wardrobe trying to impress clients and bosses. Take a small portion of that clothing budget and impress the ones we love the most: our family members. We want our family members to think of us at our best, not our worst – especially our partners and husbands. Ask yourself  ‘Would I have lounged around in these clothes when we first met? Probably not! So do something about it, and it can have an impact on your relationship – you both deserve it!

An easy way to get you into a nicer looking comfy wardrobe is to shop at high street retailers. You will be able to find comfortable, fun, and affordable clothing that will allow you to guiltlessly toss those frumpy things you’ve been holding onto. Try Uniqlo, H&M and Primark – but resist the temptation to buy more than you need as they are so cheap!

Lighten up

You can bring out a whole other side of your personality with new loungewear. If you tend to wear dark clothes or neutrals at work, buy some bright colours or fun patterns to brighten it up at home. It’s a better transition to go from great looking smart work clothes to fun and colourful lounge clothes. I promise you, you’ll feel better about yourself.

If your professional outfits consist of stiff or constraining fabrics, find super soft cottons, cashmere blends, or linens to make your skin feel great. Relieve your waist from waistbands that have been pinching at you all day by getting trousers that have a cotton/lycra or viscose blend, like these from Uniqlo.

Pair it wrap cardigan like the DKNY cozy (above) or a cotton hoodie. Taking off your heels at the end of the day can be the best feeling ever. Transfer those sore feet into comfortable flats or slippers, such as Bloch (left)
